FAQ – Autocorrelators for Ultrafast Lasers
What Is an Autocorrelator?
An autocorrelator is a measurement system for determining the pulse duration of ultrashort laser pulses. It enables the characterization of the temporal properties of femtosecond and picosecond pulses and is an important tool for optimizing modern ultrafast lasers.
The measurement principle is based on splitting the laser beam into two sub-beams. These are overlapped in a nonlinear medium, such as an SHG crystal (second harmonic generation). The resulting signal depends on the temporal overlap of the two pulses. Analyzing this autocorrelation makes it possible to determine the pulse duration.
Why Is Pulse Duration Measurement Important?
Pulse duration affects the peak power of a laser pulse and plays a decisive role in many applications involving ultrafast lasers. Precise pulse duration measurement enables:
- Optimization of compression stages
- Verification of laser performance
